JSU Mass Comm students and faculty win at AP Awards Banquet

Jackson State mass communications students and faculty were among the winners at this weekend’s Mississippi AP Broadcasters annual awards presentation.  The MAPB honored the state’s best in professional and college broadcast journalism on Saturday evening, April 26, at the Capitol Towers building in downtown Jackson. First, second and third place winners were announced at the banquet.

The MAPB also honored civil rights leader Medgar Evers posthumously as the 2014 MAPB Pioneer.  The award recognizes individuals who have broken color barriers in tv and radio newsrooms across the state.  “Mr. Evers was a true trailblazer for African Americans and the broadcast industry,” said MAPB President and WLOX news director Brad Kessie. The tribute included an inspiring video by retired CBS Correspondent and 2011 MAPB Pioneer honoree Randall Pinkston. The report, which was Pinkston’s final story for CBS, was aired in May 2013 and tells how Medgar Evers made a significant impact on the efforts of African Americans to have a voice on Jackson TV.

Kessie also said many of today’s journalists are not aware it was Evers who fought the WLBT establishment and finally got the forum he desired, so his point of view could be heard on Jackson’s airwaves, or that his efforts paved the way for Pinkston and other African Americans to appear on local stations in Mississippi and across the country.  Pinkston presented The 2014 MAPB Pioneer award, which was accepted by Ever’s wife Mrs. Myrlie Evers-Williams.

Its going on four weeks since the inception of JSU Connection, the new radio show airing live on Tuesdays from 12:30 to 1:00 p.m. on WLEZ, 98.1 FM.  The show is broadcast live from the Mississippi e-Center @JSU and is hosted by  JSU Mass Comm department Interim Chair Dr. Monica Flippin Wynn. I host a segment called TechTalk.  MC student Crystal Hilliard also does a JSU Campus update.  Since she wasn’t in today, I had the pleasure of interviewing Isaac Carree.  You may recall he is the former lead singer for the contemporary gospel group, “Men of Standard.”  Caree will be performing live on Friday, June 21st at the “U,” located at One University Place at Jackson State University.  Check out my radio interview below with Isaacc Caree and hear him talk about his new CD, “Reset,” being released next week… and get a sneak listen to his single, “Clean this House.”

JABJ Journalists “Keep It Real” with Student Journalists

JABJ career workshop panelAspiring journalists in the mass communications department at Jackson State University recently received great career advice from local media professionals.  The JABJ Career Workshop was sponsored by the Jackson Association of Black Journalists.  Panelists included WJTV Newschannel12 anchor Byron Brown and reporter Perrise Thomas; Clarion-Ledger Feature reporter Cassandra Mickens, Legislative reporter Jimmie Gates and Human Resources manager Netalia Bradley; Jackson Free Press reporter R.L. Nave; and One Voice Communications manager Zakiya Summers. Topics ranged from how to land your first job and internship to making sure a student’s social media posts don’t sabotage your chances of getting hired.

The career workshop set the stage for the upcoming JSU Mass Communications Day, which celebrates the accomplishments of graduating seniors and will include student competitions and judging by industry panelists.  In the coming weeks, I’ll share more information on that event, which will be held on Wednesday, April 17th at the MS e-Center@JSU.
